Isaiah 1:2-31 An Indictment against a rebellious nation.

Isa 1:2 Listen, heaven, and pay attention, earth! The LORD has spoken, “I raised my children and helped them grow, but they have rebelled against me.
Notes: Heaven and Earth are summonsed to bear witness to the Apostasy ,rebellion ingratitude and deep depravity of God’s Chosen people. Isaiah shows how deep was his feeling from the bursting forth of this indictment. Cp. Deut 32:1; Ps 4:3-4; Ezek 6:3; 36:1.

Isa 1:3 Oxen know their owners, and donkeys know where their masters feed them. But Israel doesn’t know its owner. My people don’t understand who feeds them.
Notes:The ox knows his master, and the donkey his owner’s manger but Israel who a created miraculously from the loins of the Patriarch Abraham does not recognise the LORD as his Master, nor Owner, nor as His provider.

Isa 1:4 “Ah! -How horrible it will be for a nation that sins. Its people are loaded down with guilt. They are descendants of evildoers and destructive children. They have abandoned the LORD. They have despised the Holy One of Israel. They have turned their backs on him.
Notes: “Ah” what a threatening sound of punishment, Isaiah brings to the Southern Kingdom of Judah. He does not pussy-foot around but calls sin for what it is, and what its consequences will be. – guilty.

They are descendants of evildoers and destructive children. NIV. Brood of evildoers KJV.

 

Notes: Like a hen gets broody so these people just scratch around and get together to hatch up evil schemes. Brood or descendants = [Zera] Heb. means seed, or sowing or offspring of  or a practitioner of evil. They are destructive children NIV or they are children that are given to destruction KJV.  They corrupt others, they destroy. They have destroyed all virtuous principles and broken down all barriers to vice. They have corrupt morals cp. Gen. 6:2 They have corrupted others by their example. Judges 2:12; Zeph. 3:7

They have despised the Holy One of Israel. They have turned their backs on him.

Notes : KJV They have provoked the Holy One of Israel. Vulgate uses blasphemed. they so incited to LORD to anger by despising Him.
